Mom’s Club: Easter (Velikonoce/Veľká Noc)

April 07, 2011 By: peterv Category: Mom's Club

Traditional Czech/Slovak Family Easter Celebration hosted by Czech/Slovak Mom’s Club at CSPS Sokol Hall

When: Saturday, April 23, 2011

Program

  • 12:00-1:00 potluck (bring items to share)
  • 1:00-2:00 Czech/Slovak Easter activities (bring blown out unpainted eggs)
  • 2:00-3:00 puppet show, pomlázka/korbač
Easter

The most significant tradition of Czech/Slovak Easter are painted eggs. At our Sokol Easter celebration, you will have a chance to learn how to decorate eggs with hot wax. You can also purchase “perníková vajíčka” (gingerbread cookies) and decorate them with Czech/Slovak motifs. We will have simpler egg coloring for younger children.

There is one specific Easter custom, which often seems cruel to foreign visitors when they see it for the first time. On Easter Monday morning boys and men can legally spank Czech/Slovak girls and women and they are even rewarded for it by the beaten ones! At our Sokol celebration, everyone interested will make a special Easter stick, made of willow branches, decorated with ribbons of different colors. Such stick is called “pomlázka” in Czech and “korbač” in Slovak. According to the tradition, young men will (gently!) use pomlázka/korbač to whip the girls to bring them good health and keep them young. As we have done in the past few family nights, we will have a puppet show for the children. Puppets are a great way to teach language as well as culture. The show will be about a boy who spends “velikonoce” at grandma’s house in a Moravian village. We hope the puppets bring to life customs that we have enjoyed as children in our home country.

Please register for this fun activity and sign up for the potluck (Czech/Slovak meals are preferred). Don’t forget to bring blown-out eggs for your children to color (paint will be provided). If you have access to willow branches, we will be needing many of those, please indicate it in the potluck sign-up.

$5.00 donation/ CSCC-Sokol member family and $10.00/non-member family would be appreciated. You can purchase perniky cookies to decorate for 50c each.

Craft and Games
There will be a simple craft for children to do and we will play some of the kid’s favorite games- “cukr, kava, limonada; rybicky, rybicky; na honenou”.

Contest!!!
Children and their parents are invited to compete in a contest for the most original story of “Little Red Riding Hood- Cervena Karkulka”. Brainstorm with your children at home and prepare a script of this well known story with a new plot. Scripts will be read by a panel of judges during our gathering at the Sokol Hall and the authors of the most original Red Riding Hood will have a chance to perform their story with puppets! Stories written in the Czech or Slovak language are preferred, but we will accept English too. You can bring the script of the story to the Hall on February 13th or email them to Lenka at braggova@spacestar.net. Only stories with scripts written and prepared ahead of time will be accepted!

Mom’s Club: Baking of Traditional Christmas Bread (Vánočka/Vianočka)

November 19, 2010 By: peterv Category: Mom's Club

Traditional Christmas Bread

Come enjoy the Christmas baking atmosphere and the spirit of the upcoming holidays! All of our Moms’ Club indoor events happen in the perfect surroundings of the CSPS Sokol Hall. This time, with support of Sokol, we would like to not only work in the facility’s large kitchen and bake the traditional Czech & Slovak Christmas bread (vánočka/vianočka), but also sell it super fresh on Friday, December 3rd, 2010 at Sokol’s  St. Nicolas Party with proceeds going towards Sokol Hall operations.

Anyone who would like to come bake, learn the recipe or donate ingredients is welcome. We will meet at the 383 Michigan Street, Saint Paul, MN 55102, on Thursday, December 2nd, 2010. We will work in shifts all day long using our recipe that will appear in the planed Moms’ Club Cookbook. Vánočka/vianočka is still a very popular Christmas treat just like a year-round popular Poppyseed Bread (makovka/makovník) which we will be also making. If you would like to donate something else besides your time the following  ingredients are needed, bring please on Saturday, November 27th (Tanecni Mladez Dance): all purpose flour, sugar, eggs, raisins, almonds, Solo canned poppyseed or lemons. Bring your children, camera and sign up for shifts or/and place your orders.
